  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Patrick -- Touching the Heart : My life began there too, the unplanned child of an American airman killed in an air crash and a vivacious Danish girl stuck in Morocco during the war years.Tears, and memories a plenty of my family’s trials surviving those years and the aftermath. What a courageous and complex story, touching the past and present, yet honoring the women who always try to make this Earth a better place. Ah, Casa, I may go back one more time if I can, to see where the first nine years were spent, and I will think of Valpy’s book if I do. If she wants to write a sequel, about our little bunch, I’d be happy to help! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Glory -- A surprise ending : I love this author Fiona Valpy. Her books draw you in and the stories are very well written. This story is about a young women Zoe finding a young girls diary written in 1941-1942 in Casablanca waiting with her family to go to America after escaping Paris when the Nazi’s invaded France. The story goes back and forth between 2010 and 1941-1942. Wonderfully written. The ending will surprise you for sure. Worth the read. I will not go into details and spoil the book. I so recommend this book who like to read about WWII and the people whose lives are ever changed during the war. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from calgal66 -- Couldn’t put this story down! : Fiona Valpy has done it again! A heartbreaking parallel storyline of a girl in WW2 & a woman in present day Morocco. I love the way Ms.Valpy intertwines the stories with historical events, tender family moments, grief and joy & relevant current day social topics. Having one of the main characters as an adolescent is brilliant- so many of her readers can put themselves in Josie’s shoes. I hadn’t really thought about the refugees during this time period or present day Morocco & it made me sideline research these stories. I also liked traveling through the country with the characters and learning about the history of its main cities and attractions. And of course Ms. Valpy is masterful at bringing the storylines full circle. This book is a must read! You won’t be able to put it down!! Best read this summer! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Heartwrenching & Timely Novel : I've read and enjoyed several of Fiona Valpy's novels, most notably The Beekeeper's Promise, so I happily preordered her latest with the expectation of becoming entrenched in World War II-era Morocco. However, despite the compelling nature of the 1940s narrative, the more contemporary storyline (2010) is the one that pulled me headlong, and at times nearly unwillingly, into the book. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Janet Herrala -- The storyteller of Casablanca : Excellent read! Great historical information! The Cross of Lorraine, the symbol of the French resistance was a revelation to me as my mother-in-law is named Lorraine and her mother was born in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France along the border of Italy. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carol MacGregor -- Mesmerizing : I enjoyed this book so very much. Beautifully written, amazingly researched, I could not put it down. The history of the era was so sad....but this story is written in a way that actually pulls you into that time, and makes the characters become part of you. A DEFINITE MUST READ BOOK. LOVED IT!!!! • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Keilani Ludlow -- Heartbreakingly beautiful : Again she hits it perfectly with a past/present story; a perfect mix of heartbreak and redemption. Her stories always make me cry but it’s the right kind of crying. Love and loss, rebuild and renew in Casablanca, Morocco in the 1940’s during WW2 as well as in 2010. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from The Cookster -- A pleasant enough read - but also quite frustrating. : Rating: 2.3/5 ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 20, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JustReading -- Ambitious and well told story : This is an ambitious book. In her warm and accessible style, Fiona Valpy addresses some weighty issues: The plight of refugees in the 1940s as well as in the 21st century, the pain of loss, mental illness, the resilience of women and the healing that can come from sharing our common humanity across boundaries of culture and age. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from J. Bloom -- Another great Fiona Valpy book : I had looked forward to receiving this book and I wasn't disappointed. I did find some of the 'chapters' a tad short which I found a bit disconcerting with the different diary entries and going from Josie to Zoe as it did. But like other readers, I couldn't put down and the twists and turns towards the end and the ending, well it took my breath away, so unexpected and surprising. I did think it was a bit conveniently rushed, coming together at some point, cannot say when as I do not want to give the story line away. Also I made the recipe in the book, not good. However The Story Teller of Casablanca is a book I highly recommend. It will not disapoint ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2021 )
